All seemed well, but was not. I executed xdg-open modules/osdiag.c In that file I searched for the string static spinlock_t diag_lock = SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED; replacing it with static DEFINE_SPINLOCK(diag_lock); and I saved and closed that file. Is there a chance that the Dell package will be updated to a newer version? replacing the /modules/imported directory of the latest linuxant driver (hsfmodem-7.80.02.04full.tar.gz) with that of Dell OEM driver (TAR package). If it did not work for me then I could have abandoned Ubuntu or set it aside on a separate partition for use later....(I do have an old external modem that http://3podjobs.com/modem-driver/hsf-linux-modem-driver.php hth ..
